Lent begins on Wednesday 17th February while the current lockdown is in full swing. This may prove to be a challenge for those who like to do something extra such as going to weekday Mass, attending the Stations of the Cross, participating in Lenten soup lunches and do on. Elsewhere on the site is an invitation to contribute financially to the work of CAFOD or to sponsor Jane and Peter Davies who plan to walk 10,000 steps for each of the forty days.
On a personal note I am going to try something different. Under the current guidelines we are asked to stay at home but we can and perhaps should go outside for exercise and fresh air, alone or with one other person or in a care bubble. Walking locally, I have noticed the amount of litter that is strewn on our footpaths so I contacted the local council and asked for a litter picking kit. This is a simple process of completing an online form and then collecting the items from the offices at Plough Lane.
So I am now fully kitted out with purple bags which can be left beside a public litter bin, a litter picker, hi-viz jacket and gloves. This small action will benefit the local community, keep the local area a bit tidier and more pleasant and hopefully inspire others. We live in such a beautiful part of the world, so let's use Lent to help keep God's creation looking a little more like the Garden of Eden.
