Update August 2022
A group of people in a number of churches in the Golden Valley have come together to act as a “hub” to welcome people fleeing Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The hub, called the Golden Valley Ukraine Welcome Group, came out of a meeting in April at Belmont Abbey, and includes Belmont Abbey and Ewyas Harold Churches Together (including Eaton Bishop), and is coordinated by Belmont parishioner Austen Ivereigh with the support of a steering group.
The past several weeks have been a steep learning curve about the processes involved in receiving Ukrainians. Austen and the team have been liaising weekly with the Diocese of Hereford, which is in turn coordinating the various clusters across Herefordshire. The Diocese is given names of potential guests (Ukrainians who are interested in coming to the UK) by Citizens UK; the diocese then passes the names out to the clusters, which make contact with the guests. Some Ukrainians tell us they have already made arrangements, or don’t want to be in rural areas, or don’t reply at all.
What we have learned is that the kinds of people who want to resettle in the UK tend to be of the more professional, middle-class backgrounds: they have smartphones and possibly cars, although of course they are fleeing destruction and death just as much as the next person. For the less educated and poorer Ukrainians in the camps of Europe, the UK is too far away and too complicated to think about; they prefer to try their luck in Poland or Slovakia so they stay close to Ukraine.
We had hoped to rent a property for a larger family, but so far this has been too complicated and risky because there were too many uncertainties involved. To this end there is now a dedicated Ukrainian fund set up and managed by the Bursar of Belmont Abbey Charitable Trust and some donations have already been received and gift aided.
Meanwhile one local couple in our area are already independently hosting some Ukrainian guests, and they attended the Ukrainian service with tea/coffee afterwards at Belmont Abbey last Sunday (1st Sunday of every month).
We have now learned that there are “Adverse Cases”, where the family have already obtained a visa but have subsequently been let down by their initial sponsor and are again waiting for accommodation. One such family will soon be moving into a property within the Belmont Abbey Grounds, the monks having chosen not to charge any rent for a year. We will use the above fund to support the family until they can become independent.
Also this week we were put in touch with a Christian couple in town who are happy to let their two bedroom property at a reduced rent specifically for a Ukrainian family, and are prepared to wait for payment until the guests arrive. Hence now we are looking to match up a family for this house and are raising funds to cover their rent and bills as well as supporting this family to settle in.
