It’s very late on Sunday night as I sit down to write this message, so I hope you will forgive its brevity. Today is, of course, the feast of St Anthony of Padua, to whom many of us have a great devotion. Although I visited his tomb many times when I was a lad, as I had an aunt who lived in Padua, such a beautiful, historic city and one of Italy’s jewels well worth visiting, it was only later in life that I found him to be a good friend and helper. Today I will be taking my mother to hospital for her pre-op checks prior to surgery on Thursday. She had been in excruciating pain for a long time with a femoral hernia, yet even going privately, it’s been impossible to find a slot until now. I’d be grateful for a prayer on her behalf. She’s quite amazing for a woman of 95.
Yesterday we had the great privilege of celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation in the abbey, 21 young people from various Herefordshire parishes including our own. They had been well prepared by catechists in Hereford, together with 19 others who were confirmed at St Francis Xavier during the week by Archbishop George. It was a joyful, uplifting celebration and it was great to see the church filled with people eager to worship God at Holy Mass. I am always encouraged by the deep faith of young people and pray that they will grow closer to our Lord each day through the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
Today’s short Gospel passage from Matthew, (Mt 5: 38-42), continues our reading of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus compares what was popularly said of old with his reinterpretation in the light of God’s commandments and what God really had in mind when they were given to the people of Israel through Moses.
This is what he has to say:
“You have learnt how it was said: Eye for eye and tooth for tooth. But I say this to you: offer the wicked man no resistance. On the contrary, if anyone hits you on the right cheek, offer him the other as well; if a man takes you to law and would have your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone orders you to go one mile, go two miles with him. Give to anyone who asks, and if anyone wants to borrow, do not turn away.”
Jesus turns a statement on revenge of our enemies into one of generosity, reminding us of what St Paul says to the Romans, “We know that by turning everything to their good, God co-operates with all those who love him.” (Rom 8:28) So rather than return evil for evil, the Lord asks us to return evil with good, for good overcomes evil.
Again, St Paul says to the Romans, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Rom 12: 21) Let us pray, through the intercession of St Anthony, that we may have the mind of Christ and always live according to the teaching and example of Jesus.
