On Monday, 22nd August, in Herefordshire we will celebrate the feast of our local martyr Saint John Kemble and tomorrow,Sunday 21st, there will be the annual pilgrimage to his grave at Welsh Newton. If you are planning to go, make sure to arrive in plenty of time, (the graveside service begins at 3pm). If you’re not planning on going, why not reconsider and join the pilgrims? For the past two years, due to the pandemic, the pilgrimage had to be cancelled, but this Sunday seems to be the ideal day for a short walk in the countryside and a prayerful visit to our local saint.
Today we continue reading the Gospel of Matthew, (Mt 23: 1-12), where Jesus addresses his disciples and the people on the teaching and attitudes of the scribes and the Pharisees. He says, “The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses. You must therefore do what they tell you and listen to what they say; but do not be guided by what they do: since they do not practise what they preach. They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but will they lift a finger to move them? Not they! Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader phylacteries and longer tassels, like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues, being greeted obsequiously in the market squares and having people call them Rabbi.” Now among the scribes and Pharisees there must have been good men, who faithfully observed the law and were humble before God and their fellows, but it would appear that a fair number of them were more interested in their positions of authority in society and enforcing their own personal interpretation of the Law of Moses to the detriment of their followers and those who heard their teaching. Jesus isn’t too impressed with their personal behaviour or the way in which they observe the Law.
He then goes on to say, “You, however, must not allow yourselves to be called Rabbi, since you have only one master, and you are all brothers. You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor must you allow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant. Anyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself will be exalted.” Under no circumstances should his disciples follow the example of the scribes and Pharisees. The hallmarks of a disciple of Jesus should be humility, modesty and obedience to the will of God. They are not to usurp the authority of God and of his Christ, choosing to serve rather than be served, humble service rather than exaltation. In other words, they should look to Jesus both for teaching and example. Help us, Lord, to become more like you each passing day and so bring others to salvation, as did St John Kemble, through our humility and patience. Amen.
