Although I listen to “Tweet of the Day” on BBC Radio 4 religiously every morning, I can never remember what bird sings which song. Hence, I’m mystified by most of the songs I hear each day. Of course, I recognise my beloved jackdaws, that abound at Belmont: they speak to me, especially as I feed them regularly. But there’s one particular bird who serenades Toby and myself every morning at the moment. As we move along, he appears to accompany us, high up above us, flitting from tree to tree, but always unseen. I have searched and searched for him, but to no avail. Then, yesterday morning, suddenly I saw him on the very top of a fir tree, and I was shocked to see it was the tiniest bird I have ever seen, a wren perhaps? How can such a small creature produce such a loud, magnificent and complicated song? He followed us, refraining from singing only when flying to catch up with us. I never cease to be amazed by the beauty and variety of creation. Toby, of course, takes it all in his stride. Yesterday, I was also able to give away a few of our white carp to a new home near Birmingham. Again, I was overcome by their beauty when we saw them close up, an extraordinary combination of pinks, whites and silver, and even the small ones are very big. The pond still looks as full as ever!
Our Gospel passage today comes from John, (Jn 16: 29-33), and continues our reading of the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus. The evangelist and those who first read this Gospel in its present form, were acutely aware of the truth of Jesus’ words, for they indeed were suffering persecution both at the hands of the Romans and of their former co-religionists. For them the words of Jesus were very much “speaking plainly.” They also knew, as well as the disciples themselves, what it meant to be scattered and put to death for their faith in Jesus Christ and for proclaiming that he was risen from the dead, Son of God and Saviour of the world. They too had experienced betrayal, arrest, false accusations, imprisonment, violence and, in some cases, a barbarous death. They were also aware that some followers of Jesus didn’t come up to the mark and had lost faith and returned to their former religious practices. He invites them to have courage, to be brave and trust in him.
“I am not alone,
because the Father is with me.
I have told you all this
so that you may find peace in me.
In the world you will have trouble,
but be brave: I have conquered the world.”
Jesus would like us all to have that inner peace that comes from knowing that he loves us, just as the Father has loved him. He has also promised us the Spirit of God‘s love in the coming of the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit. If Jesus has conquered this world of sin and death, then in him we too can become, in the words of St Paul, “more than conquerors.” “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37) Let us pray for the grace to fulfil each day this prayer of Jesus, for with him all things are possible.
