Ears to Hear, the sharing and listening meetings continue to take place at Hedley Lodge.
Throughout Lent we have started a deep listening exercise as we seek to discern a new vision for the parish. It has been wonderful to hear the heartfelt hopes, fears and ideas from around 30 different parishioners.
This coming week we will hold the final session as we ask two questions “How do we make a difference?” and “How could you/we make a difference?” The session will be held at Hedley Lodge on Monday 20th March from 1pm to 2.30pm and repeated on Thursday evening 23rd March from 7pm to 8.30pm. You are warmly invited to come to either session to suit you. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t been to the previous meetings, everything you have to say will be heard and form part of our new mission.
On Saturday 1st April there will also be a feedback session to the parish at Hedley Lodge from 2pm to 3.30pm. This will be an opportunity for you to hear what has been said, ask questions and discuss what this means for the parish for the future. Please come if you are able.
The dates of the remaining meetings are:
Monday Group – 1.00pm to 2.30pm 20th March
Thursday Group – 7.00pm to 8.30pm 23rd March
There will be a feedback session on Saturday 1st April 2.00pm - 3.30pm.
If you've not had chance to come along, please try and attend one of the two meetings. It's friendly, with a cuppa and the chance to meet new people who are also new to participating in the process, as well as parishioners who've been involved throughout.
It's important to be involved to have your voice heard as we go forward together as a parish. Everyone listens and shares, you can say as much or as little as you want, and there is a prayerful element throughout the meeting.

‘Ears to Hear’ - help us listen to you
During lockdown and the pandemic many of the groups and activities of the parish stopped. It has left us in a rare pivotal moment with a clean slate in front of us. Do we want to continue the same as we always were or are there things we’d like to do differently? As a Pastoral Council we know we cannot answer this alone - it can only come from listening to everyone in the parish. We warmly invite you to be part of this.
Throughout Lent we will hold six meetings and ask six questions; the feedback for which will give us a starting point or framework for a new vision for the parish.
It may be that you are perfectly happy with your faith, your parish and the activities you participate in. This is as important for us to know as knowing that you are not. We would not want to ‘throw the baby out with the bath water’. But if you are looking for more, either for your yourself in terms of faith, spirituality, inclusion or activities; or for others in what you feel you or we should be doing, then we would like to know this too.
So that everyone is heard and has an equal voice, during the meetings we will follow a synodal method. Put simply, this means everyone has the same amount of time to speak; they will not be interrupted or questioned, only listened to. This is not a new idea, in fact it was the way the early church decided what they would do. They gathered together and everyone from the oldest to the youngest had a chance to speak. It was how they discerned the will of the Holy Spirit. We will seek to do the same.
We cannot stress enough how every voice is equally important to this. Even the smallest contribution and the quietest voice are vital. Please come along if you can.
The questions, which will cover three themes of Communion, Participation and Mission are:
Week 1
- What are your experiences, hopes and fears for your parish?
Weeks 2 - Where would I like to develop in my faith and how can your parish help?
Week 3 - Do I feel involved in my parish?
Week 4 - How can we engage more with our parish?
Week 5 - How do we make a difference?
Week 6 - How could you/we make a difference?
When?
There are two meeting options - daytime or evenings. The final meeting will be on Saturday 1st April where we will invite both groups to come together.
The dates of the meetings are:
Monday Group - 1pm to 2.30pm
20th February

Thursday Group - 7pm to 8.30pm

Saturday 1st April 2pm - 3.30pm
Where?
The first meeting will take place in Hedley Lodge. Depending on numbers at that meeting, subsequent meetings will either be at Hedley Lodge or the Parish Centre.
What will happen in the meetings?
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served. There will be a welcome and introduction by the group leader/Moderator. Then depending on numbers, the group will be split into smaller ‘Listening groups’ of 6-8 people. Everyone will have up to 3 minutes to speak and in between each person talking there will be a prayer or silence. The moderator will take some notes and invite the next person the speak. At the end of everyone speaking, the Moderator will sum up what has been said ready to feed back to the Pastoral Council.
Inclusion
We would like to include as many parishioners as possible. We also want to reach out to those people who for whatever reason do not currently come to mass but are still part of the parish. Whether they have been excluded, feel disenfranchised or have not felt welcome. Can you help us reach out to them? Is there a family member or friend that fits this bill that you could invite along with you? Their voice is equally important to us. We would love to see them.
What will happen afterwards?
This is a ‘deep listening’ exercise for the Pastoral Parish Council as we seek to discern a new vision for the parish. Nothing you tell us will be lost. This is the start of what we see as an ongoing process. Over the coming weeks, months and years your voice will shape what we do.
