We’ve had a wonderful few days at Belmont, enjoying the celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and, of course, looking forward to and celebrating Pentecost in style and with great devotion. Yesterday we also had the great privilege of giving hospitality in our church to the local Ukrainian community for the celebration of the Liturgy by Fr Liubomyr, Ukrainian Parish Priest of Gloucester, together with his brother and Deacon Timothy. This was followed by tea and coffee, served with delicious Ukrainian cakes in the Parish Centre. The next Ukrainian Mass will take place on 3rd July. Meanwhile, the situation in Ukraine gets worse as each day passes. Will no one put an end to this barbarous behaviour on the part of the aggressor? If nothing is done, this madness, causing the murder and destruction of a free nation will carry on relentlessly and cause irreparable damage to the economy of many nations, resulting in the starvation and migration of countless millions. Lord, have mercy on Ukraine and her people. We beg you to often and convert the hearts of those responsible for this senseless, inhuman war.
Today the Church keeps the Memoria of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, conscious of the fact that Mary is the Moher of Christ, the Theotokos or Mother of God, she who conceived and gave birth to the Word made flesh, Jesus our Lord and our God. It was through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that she conceived Jesus, Son of God, in her womb. She gave him our flesh and blood and was the Temple of God’s glory, the ark of the new covenant in the blood of the Lamb. At Pentecost, she was with the apostles and disciples of Jesus, accompanying them in fasting and prayer, when they received the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Gospel passage chosen for today comes from John, (Jn 19: 25-34), at first sight a surprising passage taken from the Passion according to John, Mary at the foot of the Cross, but there is good reason for this, as we shall see.
“Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home.” There are many interesting things about this passage, which goes on to give details of the death of Jesus and how from the wound in his side, made by the soldier’s lance, “immediately there came out blood and water.” You could say that this is the moment when the Church was born, rather than at Pentecost, for the Church of Christ is founded upon the water of Baptism and the blood of the Eucharist. When Jesus says to his mother, “Woman, this is your son,” and to the beloved disciple, “This is your mother,” Mary becomes the mother of the disciple and he Mary’s son. The disciple represents the Church, that community of believers who have surrendered their lives to Jesus and now come under the protection of Mary, while they accept and love her as devoted children. Thus, Mary becomes Mother of the Church, your mother and mine, the new Eve, the Mother of all who live, Genesis 3: 20. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
